Packaging Trends for 2020
Replacing single-use plastic is now widely the focus for most leading brands. Using recycled material replacements such as corrugated packaging and 100% recyclable materials like glass, metal and paper will help to ensure that brands can meet consumer demands for more sustainable packaging solutions in 2020.
We are however seeing some packaging trends appearing that take this a whole step further…

Edible Packaging
Possibly one of the most sustainable solutions you could create, edible packaging is expected to continue to develop in 2020. We have already seen products such as the edible, marine-degradable straws from sustainable packaging supplier Loliware. An alternative to plastic straws that can be composted, eaten, and even add flavour to your drink. Loliware has developed the straws made from a seaweed-based material which is entirely biodegradable, marine-degradable, and non-GMO.
In November 2018, researchers from The University of Nottingham developed edible and 100% biodegradable food film using carbohydrates and proteins. It is said to improve storage safety and food shelf life.
Indian edible cutlery manufacturer Bakeys created edible spoons after seeing how much waste was created by single-use plastic cutlery. The vegan-friendly spoons are made from rice, wheat and sorghum. At the moment the spoons are only shipped throughout India, with Bakeys planning to ship worldwide in the near future.
